Question: I have a payroll question about QuickBooks. The client will import timesheets into QuickBooks. He wants to import timesheets weekly but not pay staff weekly. I will be paying staff on a bi-weekly basis. Is there a problem having two timesheets for one payroll period?
Answer:
There’s no problem at all. QuickBooks timesheets are always on a weekly basis and most businesses don’t do weekly payrolls. QuickBooks pulls the time from the timesheet based on the payroll period, so there may even be times when you’re pulling information from three or more timesheets. For instance, the 10/1/09-10/15/09 pay period straddles three weeks and the entire month of October straddles five weeks. But if you’re doing biweekly payroll and your timesheets dates match your pay period dates, you’ll always just have two. You can change the first day of your workweek at Edit > Preferences > Time & Expenses > Company Preferences.
Just remember, timesheets are non-posting so they don’t actually affect the financials until you pay for the time, either through payroll (for employees) or a bill/check (for subcontractors). Until it’s paid, it’s informational only.
