If you want to email invoices through QuickBooks, you’ll need to upgrade to either 2008, 2009, or 2010.  You can, however, print an invoice as a PDF and email it manually.

You can get QuickBooks Pro 2008 for only $69.99 on Amazon, but you’ll probably only be able to email invoices for another year since Intuit usually discontinues support for the three-years old QuickBooks version each May.  For instance, 2007 will no longer be supported on May 31, 2010.  One of the many things that stop working is the ability to email invoices.

For this reason, I recommend purchasing QuickBooks Pro 2010 instead.  It’s only roughly $50 more on Amazon ($121.59) and you’ll likely be able to use it to email invoices for another three years instead of just one.  Plus you’ll get all the new features not available in 2008.  For some reason, QuickBooks Pro 2009 is currently more expensive than 2010 on Amazon ($135.99).

If you’re a 501(c)(3), you may qualify for a 1-user download of QuickBooks Premier 2009 Nonprofit edition for only $32 at Techsoup.  Even though you’ll probably only be able to use it to email invoices for two years, you can’t beat the price!

One more thing to keep in mind – you may have a problem upgrading your 2003 file to 2008, 2009 or 2010.  If this happens, you’ll need to upgrade it to 2006 first.  Most experienced QuickBooks ProAdvisors keep a copy of 2006 handy to help when this happens.
