News Flash – How will Columbus Day (Monday, October 10, 2011) Affect your QuickBooks Payroll Processing

To allow for the Columbus Day holiday, you might need to send payroll a day earlier than usual. Doing so will help you to comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act and ensure timely payroll tax payments.

If your normal paycheck date is on 10/10/11, you should:

  1. Change your paycheck date for your direct deposit employees to Friday, 10/7/11.
  2. Send your payroll by 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, 10/5/11.

If your paycheck date is immediately before or after Columbus Day, consult the table that follows to find out when to send your payroll and when your account will be debited.

*Accounts are typically debited before regular banking hours, so you should make sure you have funds in your account to cover the payroll onthe day before the actual debit occurs.

How to Include the Cost of Car Repairs in Inventory in QuickBooks

I have a QuickBooks Enterprise client who isn’t using any inventory feature in QuickBooks because of the repair that needs added to the cost of the cars in their inventory. Last time I checked, QuickBooks inventory couldn’t handle this. I wanted to see if that has improved in QuickBooks Enterprise 2012.

You can create an inventory assembly item to include the cost of repairs. You’d create an assembly with the inventory item and an other charge item for the repair cost. When you build the assembly, it’ll reduce the inventory item on-hand quantity down to 0 and increase the assembly item on hand quantity to 1.

Search the Help menu for assembly items for more info. It’s available in all versions of QuickBooks Enterprise, not just 2012. It’s also available in all versions of QuickBooks Premier. It isn’t, however, available in QuickBooks Pro.

How to Process Employee Expense Reimbursements in QuickBooks

Hi, another question. What is the best way to process employee expense reimbursements? I have an employee list and a vendor list and the enter bill function won’t let me see the employee list. Thanks!

You can create a vendor name for your employees, though it must be different from the vendor name. Some people add middle name initial or simple a -v at the end.

Or you can process the reimbursements through payroll. Just make sure to add an Addition payroll item and select None for Tax Tracking.

How to Setup Advanced Inventory in QuickBooks Enterprise

Ruth, I added Advanced Inventory when I purchased QuickBooks Enterprise 11.0. Do you have a link to a site that gives instruction on how to use the inventory system? I’d like to set up my locations and get inventory set up but not sure how to use the system. Thanks.
I’d start with Help > Setting Up Advanced Inventory. It’s pretty easy, but feel free to contact me again if you have any problems.

I don’t know if you’ve heard yet, but Advanced Inventory for QuickBooks Enterprise 12.0 is adding lot/serial numbers and FIFO.
