QuickBooks Merchant Services
  • Action Alert: All merchants who process credit card payments in QuickBooks As you probably know, hackers and cyber-criminals are getting smarter and more sophisticated all the time. And credit card numbers are high on their list of info to steal. In response, the credit card industry has tightened security standards for all applications used to process credit cards payments. These standards are referred to as PA-DSS (Payment Application Data Security Standards) and they’ll be revised on July 1. One very important aspect of these new PA-DSS standards is the mandated use of ‘complex’ passwords. A complex password is simply a password that contains at least 7 characters with at least one number and one uppercase letter contained in the password. And it needs to be changed every 90 days. Complex passwords are harder to hack and they give both you and your customers more protection from cyber-criminals. There’ll be a QuickBooks update available in early June 2010 that complies with the new credit card protection standards. This update lets you easily create a complex password so you can continue to open your merchant-service enabled company files and process credit card payments in QuickBooks. If you’d like to learn more about the new password requirements, you can review Article INF12850 The bottom line: These new protection requirements will make your customer’s credit card information a lot more safe and secure. And that’s good for everyone.

How to Get the Best Price on QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Premier

Ruth, do you sell QuickBooks? It would be nice to know who sells, for example, QuickBooks Pro, instead of posting on the boards “Costco & Sam’s have QuickBooks Pro for $100.”

I do sell all the desktop versions of QuickBooks and I always have lower prices than Amazon for QuickBooks Point of Sale and QuickBooks Enterprise.

However, I can usually only beat Amazon’s prices on QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Premier for the first few months after a release. Once Sam’s and Costco start discounting (usually in Jan/Feb), Amazon’s prices drop dramatically.

My goal is for my clients get the lowest prices possible, whether it’s from me or a big box store. I like Amazon because they’re almost always have the lowest prices (from Jan-Sep) and you don’t need a membership. So once Amazon’s prices drop, I steer my clients to my Amazon store.

One thing to keep in mind is that Amazon’s prices change frequently. So if you don’t like the current price, it might be lower soon. However, it could also go higher. If you bookmark our store, you can check back often to see what the current pricing is for a shipped CD vs. download, QuickBooks Pro vs. QuickBooks Premier, etc. all on one handy page.

How to Import Accountant Changes into a QuickBooks Backup File

Hello Ruth:

Since I know you have a lot of experience maybe you can help me with this. I just started my practice and become certified as a ProAdvisor. Last week I got my first client he is a Psychologist Doctor. He sent me the file that his old account sent him when he finished his books for 2010. so what I have is a file backup and a file with the Accountant Changes, when I opened the Accountant Changes in my QuickBooks Accountant 2012, it won’t let me incorporate the changes into the backup copy. Is there any way that i can do it without having to tell my client to do it and then send me the Accountant’s copy? If i create an accountant’s copy would I be able to incorporate the changes? Or I will have to enter the JE’s manually?

I will appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

First, make sure your client has upgraded to QuickBooks 2012. If not, he won’t be able to open the file when you send it back. In this case, unless you’re going to work on his computer (either onsite or remote) either you’ll need to find a copy of his version or he’ll need to upgrade to QuickBooks 2012. Old versions can be found on Amazon, but they’re much more expensive than the new version.

If he is using QuickBooks 2012, first restore the backup (File > Open or Restore Company > Restore a Backup Copy), then import the Accountants changes (File > Accountant’s Copy > Client Activities).

If your client removed the restrictions, and many do because they are so frustrating, you won’t be able to import the changes. Creating your own accountant’s copy won’t work either. Only the accountant’s copy that the old accountant worked on can be imported into the file with his changes, assuming the restrictions haven’t been lifted. If the restrictions have been lifted, you’ll have to re-enter the journal entries manually.

News Flash – QuickBooks Pro only $99.99 and QuickBooks Premier only $227.99!

Looks like the steep discounting from Sams Club and Costco over the last month has finally got Amazon’s attention and they’ve followed suit.

This usually happens soon after the holidays, and once Amazon breaks the $100 barrier on QuickBooks Pro it usually stays right around this price until the next version of QuickBooks is released, which is usually in September/October.

Since Amazon’s price is actually much lower than what we pay Intuit, even though we’re Intuit Solutions Providers, we have no choice but to remove it from our QuickBooks price list.

However, we have put together an Amazon store on our website that lists all the lowest prices on QuickBooks Pro, QuickBooks Mac, QuickBooks Premier, and QuickBooks Accountant. We also threw in some of our favorite QuickBooks training guides as well as the lowest prices on TurboTax – hey, it’s that tiome of year after all and nothing works better with QuickBooks.

For those of you 2009 users who are facing Intuit no longer supporting your product this May, this is the perfect time to start tracking prices. QuickBooks Pro probably won’t get much lower, but QuickBooks Premier probably will. We’ve seen it below $200 once prices start dropping.

Remember, as of May 31, 2012 Intuit will no longer support the 2009 product line. This not only means you won’t be able to get tech support if you need it, but that many important services will stop working – payroll, merchant services, online banking, even the ability to email forms and reports.

So, bookmark our Amazon store and keep checking until you see a price you like!
